This intricate sculpture of Ganesha hand carved by Indian Artist R. Mani depicts one of Hinduism’s most popular deities.

Ganesh, the son of Shiva and Parvati and brother of Murugan is well known as a remover of obstacles. He brings wisdom, success and good luck. Elevated by the traditional style learnt from skills passed down by generations, R.Mani communicates the layers of history and symbolic language that is so rich in Indian art.

Lord Ganesh sits above a supporting lotus in the Lalitasana position or “royal ease”. His large ears extend forward intently with the capacity to listen and assimilate ideas. A halo surrounds Ganesh’s head indicating the sacredness of this revered god. He is portrayed with four arms, each representing the four realms of beings including the sea, land, water and air. The medium of soft stone compliments the detailed carving resonating its own pattern of marble tones including earthy reds and umber.

ABOUT THE ARTIST - R. Mani

Mani, born in 1965, is originally from Mahabalipuram located in Tamil Nadu state, South India. Mani was brought up surrounded by Art. His father, Dhruva Pratap was a well-known sculptor, maintaining and restoring sculptures of the famous Konark Temple in South India. Then passing his skills on to his son.

Mani sources his inspiration from world famous temples in India such as Meenakshi, Khajuraho, and Ellora Cave to name but a few. Influenced by Gupta and Kushan style sculptures, the artist specialises in traditional Indian Gods and Goddesses. He works with traditional Indian materials such as Sandstone, Granite and Marble.

Holder of two awards from the President of India for his work, he is especially well known for his Buddha sculptures. He imbues his Buddha faces with such serenity and a sense of bliss that it’s no surprise they are used by so many to assist in deep meditation. Some of the leading meditation centres around the world carry his work. R. Mani's intricate Goddess figures are equally revered and he has exhibited his work both in Germany and the USA.

Note: With all hand made stone and wood sculptures, there might be some natural erosion with cracks and spots, but that adds to the one of kind pieces that we sell here at Mystik River.
