Acrylic and chalk paint on thrifted wood cabinet
Melbourne, Australia
Born in Latvia and based in Melbourne, Tereza Biezaite is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores symbolism, folk wisdom, and the emotional resonance of handcrafted objects. Drawing on archetypal imagery, mythology, and personal transformation, her practice creates contemplative spaces where healing, memory, and imagination intertwine.
Sanctum is a one-of-a-kind hand-painted cabinet that draws inspiration from Mexican sacred heart iconography, global folk traditions, and botanical motifs. Bursting with vivid colour and intricate pattern, the piece radiates a playful yet deeply symbolic presence.
At its centre, a heart opens to reveal a third eye blooming like a flower and shedding tears. Below, two birds gently receive these tears, honouring the tenderness and beauty of awakening — the profound experience of seeing clearly and feeling deeply, even through moments of vulnerability. The imagery reflects an enduring spiritual idea: that the tears shed by an opening heart can become nourishment for the soul.
Inside the cabinet, two white hands extend a quiet blessing, transforming the work from a functional object into something resembling both an altar and a magician’s chest. Part sculpture, part painting, and part vessel, Sanctum invites the viewer into a world of wonder, reflection, and care.
A unique artwork that celebrates transformation, intuition, and the sacred hidden within everyday life.
