A statue of a Standing Buddha in rare combination of Vitarka and Varada mudras (hand gestures) by artist V. Sompura. A standing Buddha is indicative of awareness and is also often associated with protection. This depiction of Shakyamuni Buddha combines Varada mudra (hand gesture), where one hand faces up and the other down, symbolising charity and compassion. It stands for accomplishment and devoting oneself to human salvation.
The left hand shows the thumb and index fingers touching, being known as Vitarka mudra. This hand gesture denotes transmission of dharma, or the truth, being the teaching of the Buddha. The circle it creates symbolises an uninterrupted flow of wisdom (dharma).
This Standing Buddha is symbolic of Buddha's compassion being transmitted through his teachings, and the value of devoting oneself to others.
